THE SITUATION
In spring 2006, Allied Waste Services – one of the Puget Sound region’s leading waste haulers – was headed into what could have been very contentious negotiations with Teamsters Local 174 over a new contract with the company’s truck drivers. Allied officials knew that mishandling the situation could lead to a protracted, costly strike.
Allied contacted The Gallatin Group.
THE GALLATIN STRATEGY
Gallatin recommended a pro-active approach. Aided by Gallatin’s strategic counsel, political relationships, and media training, Allied officials reached out to their employees, their customers, elected officials and union leaders. Through letters to customers and public officials, internal communications, personal meetings, and press releases, Allied officials made it clear that they were committed to their customers and employees, and would continue to improve customer service, working conditions, salaries and benefits. Through it all, Allied officials had a single, consistent message: We are committed to a reasonable and responsible contract.
THE OUTCOME
In the end, Allied reach agreement with its union employees without a strike. In the process, Allied strengthened its relationships with its customers, elected officials, employees and union leaders.
